Saatchi and Saatchi Seminars Start May 17th--Apply for Internship NOW

The series of three seminars that have been long awaited are slotted to begin on May 17th and the internship applicants need to apply before May 16th.  First choice must go to METS Students but I welcome all-- but you must come to interview with me.

All prospective students who will rejoin the internship in September are expected to attend the seminars which will provide the backbone of the expected work to be done over the summer in preparation for the start of the program in September.  There will be a total of 10 to 11 visitations to the Saatchi and Saatchi location starting in the final week of September and ending in the first week in June of 2014.  All grade 10 and 11 students must attend the May/June Seminars in 2013 and participate in the Summer Summit Experience in order to  participate fully in the full year internship in the fall.

All participants must see Ms. Ballard for a pre-interview before May 16th in order to participate in the program and internship.  GPA and conduct grades will be discussed with Ms. Ballard--as part of the interview.  The grade 11 students (as of next year--currently in grade 10 now) will do a two year internship and the grade 12 students (next year--currently in grade 11 now) will do a one year internship.  Returning students have the advantage over new applicants.  Email Ms. Ballard at jballard@lbschools.net or come to see me in room 132 anytime but period 6.  Thank you everyone!!!!!   Remember this is the only internship of this kind in California, please take advantage of it and treat this with the respect and focus the program deserves.  You should have a strong interest in graphic design, advertising, viral or video production work, special effects technology, marketing and or course advertising and advertising design!  Ms. B

First EBA/Poly Business Partner Breakfast

The first EBA/Poly Business Partner Breakfast took place on April 30th.  More than 25 Business Partners attended the breakfast and then took a tour of the various academies.   Everyone shared about their personal interest or connection to Poly either as teachers, students or as Business Consultants.  The event proved enjoyable and informative.  Many of the  business attendees expressed the desire to stay longer so that they could enjoy more time with the students and teachers, while discussing how they might be of service in a variety of ways to our high school and most importantly, to our SLC's.  Overall, the day was extremely well received by the District Representatives, the Business Partners and the Student Representatives from every academy.

This is all in an effort to build a better relationship between the SLC's and Business, in order to plan more internships, classroom visits, worksite tours and externships for our teachers.  The Externships for our teachers help them to job shadow at a particular location in order to witness the structure of the organization and how everything fits together in the workplace.  This entire effort builds a stronger connection between the students and their educational goals in both career and in college planning.  Poly anticipates having another breakfast next fall and Spring. All of us wish to thank the students, teachers, the business/community partners and administration for thier help to make this happen!!

MAPS Forms Alliance with HealthCorp.

Later that afternoon,of April 30th following the EBA/Poly Breakfast that took place in the morning,  the MAPS Academy conducted its first Business Advisory Meeting with additional attendees who were unable to attend the morning EBA/Poly Breakfast.  Included in the meeting was the Dr. Oz. organized group, HealthCorp, whose members and others representing the medical and paramedical field attended the 3:00 pm Advisory Meeting for the MAPS Academy.  Not only that, but Ms. Sawyer stated that they are actually committing $150.000.00. dollars in order to build healthy informative programs for the students.  This includes a culinary class that teaches the students how to cook in a healthy manner.  This culinary class is one that continues for weeks, not just a one time effort!  Other events include a health faire that HealthCorp shall sponsor, it will include all Poly Students and have speakers to come to address a variety of health concerns in the classrooms.  Different health concerns shall be addressed and referrals will be available to our students.

Ms. Sawyer also stated the Healthcorp will be starting a clinic across the street at Roosevelt (after it is finished with reconstruction) and additionally a clinic will be on the campus of Poly for the students.  The clinic will address a wide variety of concerns for our students that are often difficult for them to address. HealthCorp will be paying for a coordinator that works solely with their organization to handle all their concerns on campus, with the balance of this funding to complete all the projects mentioned earlier. They are also installing similar programs at  Cabrillo and Lakewood Highschools and many middle and elementary schools, a few in the Long Beach Unified School District.

HealthCorp released this information in their introductory letter to our Principal, Mr. Jarels and MAPS Lead Teacher, Ms. Sawyer.

"We are currently in 66 high schools across 14 states and your school will join 5 other new schools in California who will have a HealthCorps Coordinator placed on site starting the 2013-2014 school year.  HealthCorps is a $75K program per school per year but is at no cost to the school.  Please review the attached documents to get a better idea of what the program entails...  I will be in your area to get a tour of the school and speak with you further about how the program will work with your school and how we can move forward to make this a smooth transition for you and your staff at Long Beach Polytechnic High School."  (Portions omitted)

Colleen  Grandis is the Healthcorp Representative and the above is her statement contained in part, which originated in the introducotry letter.  Dr. Oz is one of the primary supporters and creators of this very important health program that will impact our school in a very positive way!  Our thanks go out especially to Mr. Jarels and Ms. Sawyer for working this program into our campus so that our students benefit by learning effective tools for getting and staying healthy!  Good going MAPS!!
