Attn: Parents of Long Beach High School Students (A Message from LBCC)

Long Beach City College has recently launched an initiative to help increase community awareness and gain positive recognition about the College, its programs, services and classes.

As a parent of a high school student, the College needs your help. We are asking for an hour of your time to participate in an important focus group discussion to share your knowledge, opinions and experiences related to LBCC.  Your input is critical to the success of this project and to future of the College.

The discussion will take place on Wednesday, June 22, from 7-7:45 pm, at Long Beach City College, LAC Campus. The discussion will be led by an independent party, Interact Communications. All information gathered will be delivered as a summary; therefore, individual comments will remain anonymous.

Participants will receive a monetary stipend in recognition of assistance with this important endeavor.

No preparation is necessary. Researchers from the branding firm will lead a discussion to gather your thoughts and ideas about the important role that Long Beach City College plays in our community and the regional economy.

A limited number of spaces are available, so please RSVP today to Brittany Triola, by email at btriola@lbcc.edu or by phone at 562.938.4205. Signups will be taken on a first come basis.

If you have any questions, please contact John Pope, Communications Director at jpope@lbcc.edu or 562.938.4206

Attention 11th and 12th Graders:  Ethnic Studies Registration Now Open

Now is the time for interested 11th and 12th grade students to register for the CSULB Ethnic Studies class during the spring semester.  This class is offered free to Long Beach Unified 11th and 12th grade students.  The class sessions will be held at each of the comprehensive high schools:  Cabrillo, Jordan, Lakewood, Millikan, Poly and Wilson. All classes will be held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.  Classes will begin on Jan. 30 and continue until May 14, 2016.  Attendance is extremely important in this college class.   If you are unable to attend more than 90% of the class sessions, you might reconsider registering for this class, as your grade will be negatively affected by absences.

Enrollment is limited to 70 students per school.  If there are more than 70 students interested per site, students will be randomly selected to participate, with 12th graders given priority.  Students who are not selected will be offered a space at another site where space is available or placed on a waiting list for the fall semester (11th graders only).

If you are interested in being considered for the spring semester CSULB Ethnic Studies class please complete the registration form.

The deadline to complete the registration form is Sunday, Jan. 17.

Please note that all notifications for the class will be sent through email.  Please check your email periodically.  Also check your spam/junk email folder, in case it is directed to that folder.

If you have any questions about the program, please see the Frequently Asked Questions sheet.  If you need further assistance, please contact Ms.Ortega at the cortega@lbschools.net.

After Los Angeles schools received threats earlier this week, other school districts in the U.S. have received similar threats that have been deemed not credible by law enforcement.  The Long Beach Unified School District was emailed the text of the same or similar threat, but again, law enforcement officials have deemed the threat not credible.  Schools will remain on their usual schedules today, and parents are encouraged to send their children to school.  We work closely every day with law enforcement and our School Safety Office to keep students safe, and you may notice increased police and School Safety officer presence on and around schools as an extra precaution.

A four-week pilot program allows students to access two pre-release practice redesigned SATs on the future Khan Academy SAT platform.  The free exams will be offered through April 30.

The practice tests will help students to be prepared for forthcoming changes to the PSAT and the SAT.  Feedback will be evaluated  to help ensure the platform is as good as possible and the practice content is unbiased and fair.

How: It's a very simple process. Here are the steps students should take to participate:

1. Create a Khan Academy account if you do not currently have one (easy sign-up here.)

2. Click here to access the practice tests. After you complete a test, you'll receive a raw score (total correct) and be able to navigate through the questions to see which were correct and incorrect.

3. Report any errors or technical problems you experience during your practice here.

4. Once you've taken at least one practice test, please fill out the brief feedback survey here.

5. After you've completed at least one practice redesigned SAT, you'll receive an exclusive SAT Trailblazer badge on your Khan Academy account (see below).

NOTE: This pilot is for the redesigned SAT, and students will only have access to two practice SATs on the Khan Academy platform for now. The link in step #2 above will bring students directly to these tests. If students navigate on the website separately and find a section with SAT materials, please be advised these are for the current SAT, and not part of the pilot research.

Technical questions? sat@khanacademy.org.

Hi everyone,

It's that time of the semester again! The California Scholarship Federation (CSF) club is accepting applications for the spring semester. CSF is a club that promotes active involvement within the community through various service projects. In addition, fundraisers are held for senior scholarships, which are given out annually. Meetings are held every Friday in Mr. Montooth's room (Rm 310).

If you have not received a copy of the CSF application, click the attachment below. Make sure to fill out all of the information and attach last semester's transcript to it. Staple an envelope with your $5 fee to your application. You can turn it in to the PACE or CIC offices by next Wednesday, March 10th (ignore the deadline on the actual application).

For clarification, List I courses are your core academic classes (i.e. English, Math and Science). List II courses are foreign language classes/academic electives (i.e. Speech and Debate, APES). List III courses are other electives.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me via Schoolloop. Hope to see you at our next meeting this Friday!

The two-week USC Dental Explorers Program (DEP) offers an exciting learning opportunity for exceptional and motivated college-bound high school students with a parallel core offering for currently-enrolled college students. The goal of this program is to assist in the development of a diverse pool of future professionals by introducing talented students, especially those from historically underrepresented, low socioeconomic and/or disadvantaged backgrounds to the dental profession.  The curriculum includes team building exercises, clinic shadowing experiences, a variety of hands-on clinical exercises and lectures on topical dentistry issues. All participants are expected to attend all sessions of the program and keep a daily journal of activities. A luncheon reception for participants and their parent(s) or guardian(s) will be held on the final day of the program.  There is no fee for the program and no stipend is provided.

Participants are required to provide their own lodging, transportation and cover any parking fees and other personal costs. A $5.00 lunch voucher, accepted only at on-campus dining venues will be provided daily.  The program will begin on July 21, 2014 through August 1, 2014 (Monday through Friday only). The program will run from 8:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.

Enrollment is strictly limited and the deadline for application is Friday, June 6, 2014.  The application is attached and can also be found here: http://dentistry.usc.edu/files/2011/12/DEP-Application-2014.pdf

Exploring College Options is a special recruitment program sponsored by the undergraduate admissions offices of five of the country's leading universities: Duke UniversityGeorgetown UniversityHarvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Stanford University. During the spring or fall of each year, the Exploring College Options group will visit all 50 states, Puerto Rico, USVI and the District of Columbia. At each event, representatives from the five universities will conduct brief slide presentations about their institution and answer your questions about the sometimes-mystifying world of college admissions. You will learn what distinguishes one fine university from another, what competitive colleges look for in the selection process, and what you can do to enhance your college application.

The programs start promptly at 7:30pm, so they suggest arriving 15 to 20 minutes beforehand to complete the sign-in process and find a seat. Programs typically last one and a half hours. Please feel free to bring your parent or guardian to the program, and if you have a friend who you think might be interested, please direct him/her to this website for registration information.

We have recently been informed that there is a Golf Tournament being planned by the Long Beach Poly High Alumni Association, stating that the tournament is to raise funds to build a new sports and education complex on the LBPHS campus. This project has NOT been approved by the LBUSD School Board.  At one point LB Poly HS formally appointed Tim Gilmore as President of the Alumni Association but it ended that relationship in 2012. Any activities of the Alumni Association and/or Tim Gilmore are not authorized or condoned by Long Beach Poly High School and the Long Beach Unified School District.

We've collected tons of new and gently used formal dresses, many of which are brand-name/designer labels, and will be offering them for FREE at our 2nd Annual Belle of the Ball event on Saturday, May 3rd. This year's event will be held at 7th Street Church, 668 Obispo Ave. Long Beach 90802.

We hope that you will help us spread the word to those you feel would truly benefit from this type of event.

Line up will begin at 9am, and doors will open at 10am. The first 20 {may be more, final number TBD the day of the event} girls in line will also have the opportunity to browse our selection of {mostly new} formal shoes to go with their dresses. There will be music, sweets, and a raffle which will include items like: certificates to get hair/nails/make-up done, shoes, accessories.

Our last event drew in over 100 young ladies, and almost everyone left that day with a dress in their hand and a smile on their face.

Please feel free to pass this message and flyer along, and do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions.

All the best,
Jennifer Bedrossian & Jessica Rivera

All Poly students are unique in their own way and have made positive decisions that deserve to be recognized. Despite the difficulties that life may present from time to time, some surpass expectations and achieve success, whether this is demonstrated through devotion toward family members, commitment to athletics, exemplary academic performance, or service to the broader Long Beach community. In any case, the “Jackrabbits to Watch” program aims to recognize students who have overcome adversity and have achieved success in their lives.

Students selected to become the 2013-2014 Jackrabbits to Watch will be awarded the following:

- A plaque including the student’s picture and a short biography detailing their accomplishments

- A certificate of recognition

- A place in the 2013-2014 yearbook as a “Jackrabbit to Watch”

- Special status as the winner of an academic award that can be added to resumes and used in applications for scholarships and college admissions.

As a prospective Jackrabbit to Watch, your task is to submit an application by December 6th, 2013 including the following:

- Transcript (an unofficial transcript is acceptable)

- An essay of approximately 500 words

- Any other supplemental information you find worth mentioning (a “brag sheet” or resume, additional information about home life, etc.)

- If a close decision must be made between certain applicants, a short interview may be requested.

The essay of around 500 words must answer one of the following prompts (in the interest of helping students juggle priorities, the following essays are both University of California prompts, which are due November 30) :

1) Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

2) Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

The contest is open to all Poly students (9th-12th grade) and although academic performance will be a factor in selecting the winners, grades will not be the most important factor in selecting the winners. There is no minimum GPA required and students of all backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

The main goal of this project is to recognize students who have found success within their lives despite adversity in any way shape or form, as judges will acknowledge that grades are not the only indication of an applicant’s merit.

Thank for your time and please send your submissions through LoopMail to Christian Vazquez by midnight of December 6th at the latest!

If you have any questions about the contest (such as issues with submitting your transcript through email, etc.) voice your concerns to Christian Vazquez through LoopMail.

Good Luck!

Please be aware that the entrance gate to the Esther Street Student Parking Lot and the north Esther Street gate of the Atlantic Staff Lot will now be closed and locked beginning at 5:00pm until 6:30am the following morning.  The reasons for doing this are to prevent residents of the Poly apartments from taking up valuable parking spaces and to prevent after school and weekend non-school gatherings which result in a fair amount of trash that must continually be cleaned up by our Poly staff.  Please pay notice to the new signage posted near the gates.   In addition, if you don't already have a parking permit displayed in your vehicle, please stop by the Activities Office, Rm. 805.  Non-permitted vehicles will be cited and/or towed away at owner's expense.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
