Tobacco Users Prevention

Smoking damages nearly every organ in the human body, is linked to at least 15 different cancers and accounts for 30% of all cancer deaths. And it costs billions of dollars each year. Yet, one in five Americans still light up.

The Tobacco Users Prevention Education (TUPE) grant at Poly provides students instruction, reinforcement activities, special events, and cessation programs at Poly and PAAL. Students and staff are encouraged to make use of the referral program for tobacco use and cessation services. The contact at Poly is Danielle Sawyer in room 514, extension 5414, or Michael Gray in the Care Center, extension 5262.

The Great American Smokeout:
Every 73 seconds, someone in the United States dies from a tobacco related illness. The tobacco industry kills over 435,000 a year (more than AIDS, drugs, alcohol, car accidents, suicide, homicide, and fires combined!) Smoking is neither stylish nor smart. The Great American Smokeout is a chance for smokers of all ages to “pack” up their cigarettes and quit smoking. It is also an opportunity to prevent our youth from starting a lifelong destructive habit. In November, the American Cancer Society encourages our nation’s 50 million smokers to say “no thanks” to cigarettes for just one day. This could be the beginning of quitting.

Smoking is an addiction, one that is difficult but not impossible to control. One third of all cancer deaths that occur each year in the US could be prevented through healthy eating habits, more active lifestyles, and maintaining a healthier weight.
