Congratulations to Poly-CIC's Top 12 finishers at the Southern Section Division 2 Finals

Sydney Wren CIC c/o '19 and Emma Robinett CIC c/o '21 finished eighth and twelfth, as two of the only other LBUSD students in the Top 12 aside of Millikan's two divers who placed first and ninth.

Poly X-Country 2-in-a-Row/14-Time Champions at DOS PUEBLOS Invitational

updated October 17, 2018

The Poly Boys' X-Country captured yet another title at the Dos Pueblos Invitational in Santa Barbara this past weekend.  With the first place finish (again) of Will Frankenfeld CIC c/o '19 along with PACE's Alex Matos and Chris Yontz CIC c/o '19, Poly took the title for the second year-in-a-row, making it the team's 14th victory in the past 16 years.

The Dos Pueblos Invitational has a unique scoring system, requiring top performances at ALL grade levels to determine the overall outcome, and PACE's Zane Witter c/o '20 and PacRim's Nic Mejia c/o '22 (brother of Natalie Mejia CIC c/o '19) helped to clinch the win.

The Boys' X-Country Team is, of course, led by Coach Mike Fillipow (CIC's Gr9 Lab Physical Science teacher and National Geology Teacher of the Year award recipient) who is also father to Jackie Fillipow CIC c/o '19 and Lauren Fillipow CIC c/o '17 and uncle to Kai Fillipow CIC  c/o '15 and Gen Fillipow CIC c/o '13 as well as cousin to CIC Japanese-program founding teacher, Tom Fillipow.  And though it's been a few years now, shout-out to Coach Fillipow's wife and Kettering Elementary teacher, Amelia Valinsky-Fillipow, who years ago proved where the Fillipow power comes from by completing a 100-mile Angeles Crest challenge after stumbling and breaking a set of ribs in the seventh mile! - a HUGE CIC FAMILY LEGACY that has brought our academy honor and distinction!

CIC Leads Lady Jackrabbits to Moore League title and CIF-SS

updated October 10, 2018

Though the LB Poly Girls' VB Team has shared the Moore League title 3 times in the past 4 seasons, 2018 is the team's FIRST UN-SHARED SOLO Moore League title since 2012, when another group of CIC Lady Jackrabbits took the team to the top of the State Rankings.

Led by co-captains, Liz Schuster (CIC c/o 2019) and Allanah Cutler (CIC c/o 2020), the team has had amazing performances from Adonia Faumuina (CIC c/o 2022), Taylor Walker (CIC c/o 2019), Alexis Durand (CIC c/o 2019) and Sofia Skukan (CIC c/o 2019) the entire season, but especially so in the final match-up against perennial cross-town rival, Lakewood.  CIC is also represented on the team by Victoria Verceles (CIC c/o 2019), and Aniah Cutler, Kourtney Brown and Gabby Cordero (all CIC c/o 2020)

Both Liz and Allanah (as well as Adonia and PacRim ninth grader Riley McGinest whose Dad is CIC alumnus Willie McGinest) have been spotlighted in the Grunion Gazette for their performances this seasons, with Liz and Allanah receiving front-page solo athlete coverage.  Articles will be posted on Rm 520 (my office)

    Good luck in CIF-SS Playoffs!

Coach Nate Retires, C/O 2021 Griffin Jeanette in the Jr Congressional Cup

Updated April 26, 2018

Apologies for no spring updates since February.

Coach Natan Bershtel has guided Poly's Girls' X-Country Team for 11 years to 11 Moore League titles and appearances at State since 2014!  Notable CIC graduate, Jessica Gonzales (c/o 2014), and many others have worked tirelessly with Coach Nate to bring victory after victory to Poly HS, and with a league record of 592:2, Coach Nate's "retirement" is well-deserved as he focuses on home and family, and of course his Math classes and department.

GIRLS WATER POLO - First Moore League Title in Poly History

Darby Huff (CIC c/o 2018), Sydney Brightenberg (CIC c/o 2018), Sydney Balle (CIC c/o 2018), Kate Sarantos (CIC c/o 2019), and many others (hard to tell who was who in the flurry of splashes) took down crosstown rival, Wilson, in an exciting match for the ages, winning the elusive Moore League title.  The team fell short of a State Championship, but taking down Wilson's unblemished record was likely just as rewarding in many respects.  Good job, ladies!

EJ Andrews (CIC c/o 2018) received a very nice write-up by CIC alum, Mike Guardabascio, for EJ's transition from Football as a freshman to captain of this year's Varsity Baseball team.  Keep fighting to take down crosstown rivals, Millikan and Lakewood!  We have a team full of CIC standouts on the squad: Andrew Bain ('18), Austin Carradine ('18), Jeff Evans ('18), Daniel Garcia ('19), Ben Garza ('19), Robert Guerrero ('19), Jordan Guevara ('19), Dominic Salerno ('19), Jesse Simon ('19), Tim Fife ('20), Will Hallock ('20), Joe Rodriguez ('20), Ethan Tapia ('20), Patrick Tucker ('20), Troy Criss ('21), Collin Griffin ('21), and Edgar Rosales ('21)

Junior Congressional Cup

Griffin Jeanette (CIC c/o 2021) took part in the Junior Congressional Cup dinghy regatta in Los Alamitos Bay this past weekend, falling short of a win but doing Poly proud in a sport that doesn't often make the headlines.  Twin brothers, Jack and Peter Sangmeister, who were slated to come to CIC, but ultimately opted for St. Anthony's down the street, also participated.
